Abstract
Background: Recently, incidence rate of malaria in South Korea is increasing again. There have been not comparative studies of the clinical features and laboratory findings according to incidence rate of malaria. Therefore, comparing ¡®high-risk area¡¯(Ganghwa) with ¡®risk area¡¯(Cheorwon) in medical records of malaria patients, we planed this study about differences of clinical features and laboratory findings according to incidence rate of malaria in both areas.

Methods: For 52 cases of Cheorwon Gil Hospital and 40 cases of Incheon Gil Hospital that live in Ganghwa or have been to Ganghwa, we examined retrospective medical records about clinical features and laboratory findings from June 2003 to May 2008. Their peripheral blood smear showed P. vivax.

Results: Body temperature on admission, duration of fever, mean duration of admission, hemoglobin on admission, and platelet after treatment showed significance differences between malaria patients of high risk area (Ganghwa) and risk area (Cheorwon) (P<0.05).

Conclusion: There are statistically significant differences in clinical courses of malaria patients between high-risk area and risk area.
